Are The Limeys On To Something? - [Matthew]

Got an e-mail this morning from a friend in the UK. This signature was at the end:

"Believers have creeds and promises.
Christians have bumper stickers and catch phrases.
Disciples have scars and stories."

Those phrases have been rolling around in my head since I read it. Not sure what to make of it yet, but I knew it was certainly provocative enough to make it into [Ping]. I'm checking with him to see where he came across it.

Sounds like Buddhism to me, although it certainly can be applied to Christianity.

Dude, no, that's frikkin amazing. Those who talk about religion, just have their pet theories, those who are "christian" by name think wearing an icthus tee is the ultimate show of faith. Real disciples of Christ live it in the trenches. hooya!

Bloody 'ell, guv'na!
That bloke's spot on!

Seriously, I like Yaconelli's take on the process nature of discipleship. A disciple is experienced, weathered, and a little bloody. Or he could just be a guy who got the crap kicked out of him by believers and Christians.

I once had a discussion with a friend who had just gotten out of bible school. He was telling me all the things he learned, and how he would change the way people preach... change the world...etc.

I later had the thought, "That guy's all knowledge and no mileage".

Many Christians are like that. We can talk the talk, because we've never walked the walk. Had we been 'through the valley of the shadow of death', we'd understand why we 'fear no evil' (and it's not because we're so freakin' smart)

'episkopos' had a comment (and a cool haiku) that just vaporized into the internet ether. Weird.

Sorry we weren't there for you this week. I promise we'll be back next week with all the Etc. magic you've come to expect. We look forward to meeting you then.
