God Bless the TV - [Erik]
So I'm wandering around blogville, following the links on the comments, and I end up here.As soon as I saw that pic of Twiki I was like, "Holy crap...Twiki...I forgot all about him!"
That was cool. Thanks geppapa.
Now, while I'd forgotten about Twiki, there are certain memories from the Buck Rogers TV show that come up pretty regularly.
For example, Buck Rogers taught me that if you sack the quarterback the play is over. He wasn't merely talking about football. He was talking about being outnumbered in any conflict. He was saying, "Go for the head. Take out the leader and the sheep will scatter." Of course, this was wisdom that the ass-backward, post-apocalyptic inhabitants of the future were not privy to. They didn't know what football was. So in this one particular dogfight, Buck proceeded to blow the lead ship all to hell and sho nuff, the other guys ran scared.
Then there was the time that Buck got a ficus tree for his sterile, futuristic living quarters. Doctors Theopolis and Huer were just about as dumbfounded by the idea as the time Buck wanted to stop taking his nutrition pills and eat some real food instead. Anyway, Mr. Rogers (jumpsuit, not sweater) and his ficus tree taught me that being close to living things of all kinds is important.
Buck taught me to appreciate rock n' roll, the Olympics, and a bunch of other things that most of us take for granted.
But as unforgettable as all of that is, I count it all rubbish when compared to the special place that Col. Wilma Deering will forever hold in my heart and mind.
I was just telling my wife about this the other night. Actually, it was the Thursday before Halloween. We were watching the vampire sorority episode of Smallville (read - excuse to get Lana and some of the other characters into lesbianesque positions while wearing skimpy clothes). I started to enjoy it a little too much and it reminded me of Wilma Deering.
(Sigh)
Wilma Deering.
Dig the hottest chick in New Chicago.
I did some research and found out that the episode of Buck Rogers titled "Space Vampire" originally aired on January 3, 1980. That would place me at 7 years old when my pre-pubescent eyes got their first look at an undead chick on the make. But it wasn't just any undead chick. I'm talking about Wilma Deering. It was the most exciting thing I'd seen. You know how chick vampires are. I'm talking about seduction at its finest. Just look at her over there. Damn. Now imagine her doing her worst to turn Buck. Mmm, mmm, mmm.
Well, all of that to say...that was the first time I was aroused by images on a screen. Before that, I just didn't know women could do those kinds of things.
I have no idea why I just told you that. I guess the point is that I learned a lot of cool things from the TV.

remember the billboards erin gray was on. it was when there were cigarette ads.
I mentioned this in passion on geppapa's blog, but I had the opportunity to work with Erin Gray on an action movie many years ago (the movie was never completed).
Two clear memories...
I was sent to ask Ms. Gray about something. She opens the door to her trailer and she's in this white tennis outfit. I think it took me a second to remember what I was supposed to ask.
Memory Two: After we wrapped for the day, I was asked to drive her back to her hotel. She fell asleep in my Explorer en route which was just as well, because somehow I got lost. I pulled into a hotel parking lot, only to realize it was the wrong one. I then glance over at Erin: not only is she awake now, she's staring at me with a 'you're lost, aren't you?' look. Busted.
Good times...
Crap. Meant to type '...mentioned this in PASSING.'
or did I?

I was geeky enough to think that Twiki was the cool part - oh, and I loved whenever they had the bird guy on. I think my first exposure to the television goddesses was Jaclyn Smith (Charlie's Angels). I actually never watched Charlie's Angels; it was just that in third grade I got some citizenship award and won a poster of her (public school, eh).
I remember having this strange desire to kiss the poster (I'm not confessing that I actually did...). Jaclyn somehow brought out certain changes in perspective.
As for chick vampire stuff - the essential visual experience is "The Hunger" with Susan Surandon, Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie. Let's just say that when things progress, Bowie's not as essential to the movie as the two ladies. (Do not watch this movie in front of your mother, or any one else who may think you are a well adjusted person).
I guess I didn't really get into Erin Gray until the "Silver Spoons" era - and then she was just the lady from "Buck Rogers."
"Yeah Ricky, that's a cool train... but where's the bird man?"
i was totally down with wilma deering. it wasn't a perverse thing, i was too young for that, but i definitely recognized that the tight, shiny clothes on her figure and her pretty face had an impact on my psyche. i think i learned that Buck was stupid for not just grabbing wilma and planting a big, wet lickery one on her. i learned from Buck that chest hair is cool (it is... isn't it?). i learned that a woman with 4 eyes, 2 noses and 2 mouths isn't as sexy as Wilma. i learned that saying "beedi-beedi-beedi" was cool. and i learned never to get involved with a guy who can remove his own head at will.

Too young for perverse? That's what I would of thought for me, but hey…it happened. I was surprised to find out that the show aired in 1980.
Granted I might have seen a re-run, but I don't think so. I watched Buck Rogers pretty regular like.
Anyway, I can't believe I was 7 (4 months away from 8) the first time I got wood from viewing sexy content. I need to read up on sexual development and find out what the hell. I mean, is it normal...at 7 (or 8) to get hot for space vampires in shiny skin-tight jumpsuits?
P.S. "lickery one" Damn man. You kill me. I'm gonna use that.
All your Wilmas are belong to us.
