Absinthe = "killer liquorice"

Apparently many famous artsy types of the past loved the stuff. According to one site, Ernest Hemingway wrote "For Whom the Bell Tolls" under the influence of Absinthe.

As of Saturday some of us added one more notch on the exotic liquor belt. We didn't know much about what we were doing which failed to create the connoisseur atmosphere. At least we saw the important parts of both the traditional (French) and Czech rituals: the louche (color change from clear green to cloudy) and flaming sugar cubes.

"After the first glass you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not. Finally you see things as they really are, and that is the most horrible thing in the world." -Oscar Wilde
