Etc Poetry Corner - [Matthew]

Well, I had a jim dandy little poem about a young lady from Nantucket, but now I can't seem to find it. Anyway, since we're here, I dug up a poem this weekend that I wrote way back in '99, but never got around to showing anybody.

Enjoy...

--------------

'It's Not About Me'

It used to be that my own plans
Were all that I could see.
Just concerned with what my hands
Could build and buy and be

All-consuming vanity
Self-absorbed society
Modesty sold separately

It’s not about you, it’s all about me.

But then one day I realized
The futility of it all
Selfish dreams, just flammable schemes
In fire will flame and fall

Unforeseen discovery
Glorious epiphany
Bracing spring of liberty

My forfeit, my freedom: It’s not about me

I’ve exited the ego trip
On which I used to drive
Sloughed off old skin, born yet again
Aware, awake, alive

Ultimate reality
Open opportunity
Boundless possibility

My motto, my mantra: It’s not about me

And then one day I’ll close my eyes
And to the dust return
Turn down the lights, leave the stage
hope deeds I’ve done don’t burn

No regret or misery
For missed opportunities
Changed lives for my eulogy

My glory, my epitaph: It’s not about me.

And then I’ll find myself inside
The angels’ sweet embrace
And be greeted, by He who completed
The glorious goal of grace

Revealing of the mystery
No sin to rend, just unity
My anthem for eternity:

It’s all about You...

You are correct, Zeke. From now on, when it comes to poetry, I shall stick to reading the classic poets like Keats, Dickenson, and Silverstein.

Good idea, Dorsey. Hey, we have enough musically talented people listening to the show. Somebody take a shot at arranging it.
