Last week the link for the etc stream at stevebrownetc worked, the link here in the blog goes to the keylife site instead and doesn't work.
Regarding the CCM talk, I was wondering if you've had the author of "Body Piercing Saved My Life" on the big show. I haven't read the book yet, but it sounds interesting.
Regarding David Bazan, I'm sad to report that he is now saying that he is an agnostic. Hopefully its not accurate, but heres a url for the Washington Times article where I read this. http://washingtontimes.com/culture/20061030-105558-1827r_page2.htm
"He said he was beginning to move away from Christianity, and he now calls himself an agnostic."
That makes me very sad
I wasn't exposed to a ton of secular music until I started listening to top 40 radio circa 1995 (I stopped in 2000 or so). Since then, my listening to CCM started to go down. I still listen to some acts (old school Jars of Clay, Switchfoot, and Sixpence None the Richer (before they got somewhat big)); but--generally speaking--I don't really care much about it anymore. A lot of it, to me, seems like the same dreck I can listen to on the radio.
In other news, I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a fantastic 2007!
Roger,
Thanks for the heads up on the link to the stream. We fixed it.
As for David Bazan, I don't care what he says, he's a believer. And that's that.
Just my $0.02 on the CCM thing (Where's the "cent" key?). First, I typically don't listen to pop music of any kind. Second, recent christian/gospel music that has grabbed my attention: Casting Crowns, and Randy Travis. I'm definatly a fan of Randy's work in the last 5 years. He's covered some of the better CCM songs in a way that doesn't sound like CCM. He's also done a lot of old hymns and some great original stuff.
Have a joy filled Christmas

Music is music it is either good music or it sucks..
That being said I did not play people that I did not like and thought were fake. I won't list them but my criteria was simple and not related to my view of the music..
Don't take your clothes off to sell your music, don't create controversy to sell your music, don't flip the peeps off who got you to were your at, be able to sing if that's what you do or in someway contribute to the music your putting out.
Music taste is to each his/her own. The main problem with the Christian industry is them not giving true representation to the artist. They never wanted to uphold POD but had to cause of there record sales.
The old your going to hell cause its electric is more alive and well then it should be. I know I have done allot of interviews. It is the same on the sec side of labels telling someone they love them but no guitar solo's more then 30 seconds. I know a couple of bands that has been told that and because of it no longer put out way cool CD's.
The Christian industry is only willing to really give any recognition to artist who are willing to write that one top 40 Christian hit they feel comfortable enough to play, on purpose or accident or they become so large they have to.
I saw it in full bloom at Spirit west coast which I love btw. PAX and other skate/ska/punk/funk/rock/rap artist all on the side stages (crowds full btw) with the exception of the Supertones because of there power in record sales.
When Jennifer Knapp opened for Jaci Vasquez I thought hell had frozen over. But Jaci is marketable not unlike Brittney with a bit more clothes.
Never mind Jennifer writes her own stuff, never mind that Jennifer plays her own instruments, never mind that there is no way you can not here every thought in her head and every bit of her soul in every thing she writes. Never mind they missed it because what started to dominate FM radio were female artist same genre of Jennifer.
But Jennifer was not the pin up girl of the year Jaci was and they blew it yet again.
As long as they are looking for the perfect Christian package we are going to get spoon feed the same stuff over and over. DC Talk and the ones like them did not have a door open in those nice dove doors they were forced open.
However I know the hell they caught when they wanted to do there own thing... that is what Artist do there own thing and if there kind they share it.
Some we like some not so much..
Sec labels tell them what to play and to market to whom
Christian labels tell what they can't play and how they have to be
That is why there is punk rock :)
DC Talk and the ones like them did not have a door open in those nice dove doors they were forced open.

They still get hell now, from what I've seen on various fansites in recent times. Some old fans of dc Talk are still waiting for them to get back together, because--in their opinion--they're best when they're together.
However, in regards to the three of them individually, I think Kevin Max gets more flack than Tait and Toby Mac combined. I think, to most fans, the other two have stuck more to (dare I say) spouting Christianese or whatnot than K-Max. IMO, K-Max's solo stuff is much better than theirs. I'm almost starting to think the group's "break-up" was the best thing to happen to him.
Shutting up now... ;)
Surprise, surprise. Kevin Max is my favorite too. People say he's gone secular because his music doesn't sound Christian.
Ok, it's very Christian if you pay attention. With Toby, I'm more like "oh that's nice Mr. Mac you rhymed redemption with yo momma. That's clever; way to go"
But K.Max's lyrics are poetic. They cut to the heart if you understand them. He also sounds better in my opinion.
Don't get me wrong, I like the other soloist's too. I wish they would come back together for old times sake. But if they don't, that's ok, I agree with Shelly.
My favorite of his work right now is "Imposter, The". Its bomb, the.
Jordan (in the hizzy)
I am glad they are not together. I like them on there own best. But us public are our own worst enemy. When the 3 tried to display there solo stuff in concert the ten's of thousands of people only wanted them together and to sing Jesus Freak over and over. Kevin Max is poetic but the reality is it is a harder sell and I have seen the sheep :P
I dare say without them breaking up there may not have been a collaboration with Terry White on the Jesus Freak books or Erace. Even though those things were done when they were "together" the reality is they did not all work on the things the same, that gave some very awesome results.
There would not be some of the new label and so forth that allows harder Christian stuff without apologizing for it.
Kevin got much slack because of his divorce cause you know, no one else in church is divorced.
I would dare say he is pretty misunderstood but I like that because if you look at his fruit there is much of it. Same with the other guys.
But the sword cuts both way. If a Christian artist is not hip enough we bitch there CCM bound, if there to hip and popular we love to bring them down. Whatever is popular in the Christian world is loved by ones who don't seem to ask questions and hated by those who will never accept it on the grounds its popular. We are a pretty jacked up culture.
If we take the away the labels and just listen to music it would be so much better. I am not a fan of country, in fact I can't stand it, it makes me angry for some reason. However I can not say I hate every country song that's just stupid. But I know form some of my groups that there are people who won't listen to anything on a DC talk album cause there DC Talk...cause Kevin is divorced...cause they went there own ways,...cause there "Christian" Artist.
I'll ask the last group do you listen to Lenny Kravitz? They do and when I tell them he is a Christian they say oh that's why his last album was not so good...then I say did you listen to it?...most say not all of it..
Ill tell the groups who only listen to Christian artist do you listen to Lenny Kravitz....no cause he is not really a Christian...
along with
Collective Soul
Lifehouse
FIN
etc etc etc etc etc
Uh shoot me now please!
btw I am not hating CCM they just don't produce much music I like.
Love now tomorrow is not promised to anyone
I miss Jennifer Knapp.
Love that Mrs. Zeke, though.
I love her, too. :)
Merry Christmas to you all and thanks Shelly, Hope your Christmas is wonderful
Most Christians think I'm not really a Christian. I prefer it that way. I'm not fully a Christian anyway. The other half of me is an athiest. The only reason that I'm not fully athiest is that Christ won't let go of me. Its really kind of beautiful; poetic and ironic. Christ is real enough that he won't let go of me, but in the same way not real enough that all of me should believe in Him. In truth, I am many different selves; a poet and a sinic, an altruist and a realist.
There is a benefit to having once been depressed. I know well my dark side. It is a demon, and its name is flesh. I am willing to admit that I am a disturbed creation, and as such those unwilling to name of their darkness hate me. They hate in the name of love for that is there darkness. Jealosy over something I don't have. They envy what is free. They won't take it. Instead they take the fruit. It is on a low branch. Easy, name-it-and-claim-it truth. It makes them feel good, like an opiate. No need for God, for forgiveness. But, like an opiate, it is a trap. It snares them all, kills them slowly, painlessly.
There is one antidote. Name your darkness. Bring it into the light for Jesus to see. Let Him take it. This is what is free. It hurts at first, but then the burden becomes His-- His pain. It is His love. He and your demon die together. Only He will return.
K. Max is divorced? You mean he is human!? Nooooo! I'll be right back, I have to go burn my albums now. I can't listen to a human beings music. I'll have to stick with the demigods like Dino and Carmen. There still perfect, right?
