Happy 1st Blog-iversary! - [Matthew]

An IM conversation from August 30, 2005...

=========

AIM IM with Erik Guzman 8/30/05, 9:36 AM

i'm trying to set up an etcetera blog
what should the etcetera blog address be

I thought we were waiting on something. We talked about putting up essays and other random crap way back.

we just haven't gotten around to it

11:15 AM
etceterablogosphere
?

alloneword

i want etcetera in it

The shrine to ourselves that we've always dreamed of.

i was just reading fancy geoffs blog
there's a comment to one of his posts ending with...
"we love you, Fancy Geoff."
from somebody named adrianne
i freaking love the ping
it's all ping

Gotta love the ping. Ping is the new goolay. without a doubt
Well, let's just set one up then and worry about consolidating everything later. I could crap out an entry or two a week. I'm sure you have brilliance backed up in your intellectual lower digestive tract.

absolutley grass roots

oh, glory! Let the adulation commence.

etcetera is taken as a user name
what would be fitting for all of us
etceteracrew

11:45 AM
etcradio, etceteraradio, etcpod... ghettopodblaster pod complex ooooh, I like that one.

Ping
just ping
what do you think

The Ping. ?

somehting with etcetera and ping
just brainstorming

not shooting down any ideas

Etc: Bring the Ping

i like that
Etcetera: Bring the Ping
Pingtacular

Ping
simple

simple, clean. I dig it.

go for it
?
Ping
can you go for "Ping"
just ping

We should definitely include this IM session as a behind-the-scenes blog.

then we can put in some kind of subtitle
Ping?
what say you

My vote would be a phrase that you can say like 'Bring the Ping.' Doesn't have to be that phrase. If you really like just 'ping' we can do that. But just one single-syllable word rolls off the tongue kind of flat. My 2 cents (why isn't there a keyboard 'cent' symbol?)

11:55 AM
My Pingaling
Culture Ping

Other ideas... Etcetera's Ping, Etcetera Presents (The) Ping, and so on. Steal This Blog.

Little Miss Sunshine - [Sharon]

Just wanted to recommend a movie Brand Trilam and I saw yesterday. Maybe you've heard of it. I know I had, but was surprised at how much better it was than even I had anticipated.

I may not be the premier in-house movie reviewer like Mr. Porter, but I can tell you this: it was a movie full of likeable characters - each with their own pain, but moved forward by their shared love for the innocent among them- little Olive.

If you want to see a movie you will laugh a great deal in, but one that will also make you cry at least once, this is it.

So there you go.

Starring: Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Alan Arkin, Paul Dano, and Abigail Breslin
Directed by: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris
Fox Searchlight Films

Etcetera @ The Movies: Invincible - [Matthew]

Invincible tells the based-on-a-true-story story of Vince Papale, a Philadelphia bartender who, after losing his teaching job and wife, wins a spot on the Philadelphia Eagles team in an open tryout.

Now, a few things must be said: it’s a PG underdog film. From Disney. I wasn’t surprised that I liked it so much as I was that there weren’t any talking dogs or animated manifestations of a character’s conscience.

Mark Wahlberg (Three Kings, Four Brothers) shines in the role of Papale. And say what you will about his acting, Wahlberg can (and usually does) play the roughneck blue-collar outsider really well. I could be picky and say his performance is too stoic, but this is a movie about football and sons and dads and times when it’s the things unsaid that matter, so the play will stand as called.

The Eagles’ new coach Dick Vermeil (played by Greg Kinnear) takes the helm of a losing franchise and as such has quite a bit on the line himself. Kinnear is solid here and, as is the Kinnear way, occasionally veers into smarmy-land, which is fine. It’s part of his appeal.

The story is set against the bleak and desperate backdrop of mid-70s Philadelphia and director Ericson Core manages to keep a fair amount of believable grittiness on screen in what, according to my research, appears to be his feature directorial debut.

The football action is hard and fast and doesn’t pull punches on the hits. In a particularly memorable scene, Wahlberg catches a pass, then gets tackled as his whole body twists in the wrong direction. Gnarly.

In all, Invincible is an enjoyable, feel-good story (screenplay by Brad Gann) that, despite my closest scrutiny, doesn’t ping on the sappy-o-meter. It’s also a film you can recommend without any caveats. And if that’s not enough for you, there’s an actor in the film named Stink Fisher.

Seriously.

Four out of five stars

Opens nationwide this Friday, August 25th

Rated PG for sports action and some mild language

Running time: 1 hour, 44 minutes
