Last night we talked briefly about the current state of the Church and it was mentioned that it would really take a revolution to reclaim what that words means. Upon further reflection, I would submit that the revolution has already begun, in a real, organic, worldwide, decentralized way, people are realizing what's been sold as 'church' doesn't always square with what we're reading in the Scriptures. It'll take a while, but I think our generations, X + Y, will see real change in our lifetimes.

I hear the stories, but don't see it locally. In the last five years, I've seen those who seem to undeerstand the Church, go from the center to the background at my church. I haven't given up yet, but if it weren't for the Sunday School program (where I teach 5/6th grade), I'd be looking for another church. I've heard others express far stronger frustrations with the church (e.g. Steve from SCP). Perhaps, it would be good to hear what others experience has been, both the good and the bad.

Matthew... I think the term revolution may not be strong enough. I have said we need more like a "cataclysm" - a sudden violent upheaval in the current church social context.

Also, I think the "church" will never square with the Scriptures... due to many factors... and I am not sure it was meant to. The church is a living organism and it will evolve and change accordingly. And I agree with you, that it will have to be an organic and decentralized "cataclysm". My concern is how we are conditioned to accept the current American model of church (i.e. evangelicalism) and whether we can break free from that model. Maybe it isn't even necessary to break free from it... but in its midst a new form will emerge.

As Erik says... yeah I was fed up. But I am pretty much beyond that to a point of indifference towards the organization called "the church". I am enjoying though the relationships I am building with believers and non-believers alike on my spiritual journey. It is refreshing for me to intersect people from various walks of life and experiences and be able to see the value they bring to the table with their experiences. For whatever reason, I feel that my life outside the church has been based ina a reality I had lost within it. Thanks for letting me share.

That quote should be on a t-shirt.

I'm beginning to agree with this. There doesn't seem to be any supporting evidence for the conventional church. *nods*

And yes, I think something has to happen. Actually, let me amend that: I think something WILL happen in regards to the conventional church. Either there will be another Reformation, or perhaps something more drastic will happen...maybe, just maybe, the institutional church will implode on itself; and people will start learning how to be the Church out in the world, without the need for a conventional setting. (I hope that makes sense.)

Hey all... I recently discovered Steve Brown, which led to a discovery of etcetera.com.

I've only listened to this 'episode,' You Bet Your Ash Wednesday. I plan to pick up you guys on regular basis...

One question... The song at the beginning of this podcast. What is the name of the band and the name of the song? Couldn't pick up exactly who it was... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Good stuff, y'all!

Zach,

Hey man. Great to have you along for the ride.

The song at the beginning of this show was Looked for in the First Place from the album The Absent Sounds of Me by Dear Ephesus.

If you go looking for it and can't find it, let me know.

Peace.
